a yearly game jam for Yume Nikki fangames.. Manda

protagonist of Manda no Yume. enters a different world when she lies in bed. In this world she can discover effects that give her new abilities.

As of v0.04 there is no ending. This project is still in active development, so things may change over time.

This game may contain unsettling or horror content.

Effect Menu

Effects

There are 5 effect slots - Hat, Head, Body, Accessory, and Feet. Each slot can be filled with an effect tied to that slot, allowing multiple effects to be equipped at the same time.

Different effects have unique passive or active abilities, and some come in multiple colors.

Mapping

As Manda explores the dream world, each map will be progressively filled in on the phone to show previously explored areas.

Taking a photo

Photos

Photos can be taken with and view on the in-game phone. While taken pictures don't have any current uses, they may be useful in keeping track of points of interest.

Pins Menu

Pins

Pins are a collectible that act as achievements, tracking progression and completion of certain tasks. Finding effects, discovering new worlds, and interacting with certain NPCs are some ways to earn these pins.

History

Yume Nikki

My first exposure to Yume Nikki was a Youtube video series by TraskNaria Youtube lets-player from 2009. My favorite part of Yume Nikki are the effects. In attempting to speedrun the game I routed and performed about half but never uploaded a video, instead choosing to run Crypt Worldsa freeware PC game by indie developer Lilith Zone.

My first dream world (2015)

RPG Maker

In 2014 I bought RPG Maker VX ACEa version of the PC program RPG Maker series for a dollar from Humble Bundlea digital storefront for video games. I worked on an unreleased comedy RPG titled Ddong Quest, which is referenced in previous Manda no Yume versions as Dustonia Online. I planned most of the game but only completed early versions of the prologue and first chapter, consisting of default assets and excessively long cutscenes. In a later chapter I planned a section similar to Yume Nikki, where a party member would briefly explore dream-like worlds. I made two worlds, a music themed world and a game world (pictured).

Dream Diary Jam / v0.01

In 2017 a post on the Yume Nikki subreddit led me to enter the first Dream Diary Jam. I was inactive on the subreddit, subbed only so the navbar wouldn't display default subs in the empty space. I had long wanted to participate in a game jam, and my prior experience in RPG Maker and interest in Yume Nikki made this one a great fit. I waited for 10 people to sign up before I did, so I was #11. Before this I had never played a Yume Nikki fangame. Very little planning went into the game prior to June, primarily focusing on effects and the effect menu.

Manda

Manda's name has no real significant meaning, and is not a shortening of 'Amanda'. I intentionally did not want to use a name with a -tsuki suffix, which is common among Yume Nikki fangames. The name was meant to coincide with mandalaa geometric configuration of symbols. imagery - which can be seen in the early nexus design. Mandaa minor antagonist from Naruto from Narutoa Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto may have been an inspiration when choosing the name. Manda's appearance is primarily inspired by Anri Sonoharaa major character in the light novel and anime series Durarara!! from Durarara!!a Japanese light novel series written by Ryohgo Narita

Setimun day and night demo

Dream Diary Jam 2 / Setimun

In 2018 for the second Dream Diary Jam I accepted a position on the discord chat mod team. I attempted to make another fangame titled Setimuna cancelled Yume Nikki fangame by LaytonLoztew, but was unable to decide on game play aspects. My goal was to make a more 'basic' fangame than Manda no Yume.

v0.02

In November 2018 I released the first major update to Manda no Yume. Beta builds were released on my discord server.

Dream Diary Jam 3 / v0.03

In April 2019 I stepped down as a mod of Dream Diary Jam discord servers. I participated in Dream Diary Jam 3, updating Manda no Yume to 0.03.

v0.04

In July 2021 I released another overhaul update, with the intention of adding content on top of it in future releases. This version introduced GameJolt integration, replaced reference hairstyles, and added autosaving.
